Are you getting the most from your blog commenting!?!?

Everyone loves getting the Blog love!

Comments mean people are reading your posts and you are getting your message out.  Even a quick, thanks for the info comment means a lot to me.  I love getting notified of new comments.  It makes me feel good that the time I take to put up content is reaching an audience.  I take a lot of time looking at other bloggers info, and if I can, share their info (with kudo’s going to the owners!).

What are some of the benefits

of posting to other peoples blogs, besides, sharing the love?

Google!

Yes, the all seeing Google loves when you post comments to other blog sites.  Do you understand the mechanics of this.  If not, let me share with you the ins and outs and how this can be even more beneficial to you as a commenter, than the commentee!

Now we all know that when you post a comment,

Google know you have placed a vote for this content.  The more votes the better ranking.  However, beyond this, Google also notates the back link (if enabled) back to your site.  Why is this important.  Well, it shows a vote to your site as well, so right now the score is 1 to 1 on helping everyone.  Back links are a real big part of Google’s algorithm on ranking sites.

Now for the TOP SECRET information

to use when posting a comment to get real mileage out of it.  When you create a comment, the site usually asks for a name.  What most people don’t know about this information, is Google uses this as the anchor text for the link.  So if you use your name, say Joe Comment, Google will increase the ranking for that key word in its ranking.   So in this case, if you do a search for Joe Comment, your page may be ranked number one.  Is this what you want, not really.  So to take advantage of this power Google has given you, use one of your Key word phrases in front of your first name.  For me, I use Internet Marketing Kris.  So every time I post a comment, I get a vote for Internet Marketing, which is one of my main key words.  This is almost like stuffing the ballot box, legally.

So the next time you feel compelled to leave a comment.  Use a keyword or a couple with your name to help you rankings.  The site you are commenting on wins and you win!  If you do this, just make sure the comment you are leaving is good content.  If not, it will look like you are spamming, and no one wants to see this!

Please let me know if this was helpful,

and try it here first!  If you don’t have your keywords created yet, contact me for a special offer.  I will help anyone that has read this post, by offering a 1 hour of Keyword research for $25.00 (I normally charge $125 for this service).  It will help you define 10-30 keywords to focus your efforts on to get google ranking and organic search traffic.  Just email me at kris@playingbiz.com and ask for my keyword special.  I will get back to you shortly to discuss!

Very useful tip. I also like comment luv enabled because it provides you a link back to your blog of your most recent post. You can also choose from any of you lost 10 blog posts to display. This will give full keyword rich title of your blog post. When ever I visit a comment luv blog it always gets a comment from me.

I also noticed after I installed comment luv on my blog the number of comments I received increased.

Great suggestion Kris about leaving your key words before your name. I never knew this. I noticed on yours you do not have a space to leave your name since it automatically places @prosperyourmind without asking for your name. Any suggestions on a site like yours?

Great post … I was aware that posting comments creates a backlink to your site and that is great news for Google rankings, but I didn't know about adding a keywork before your name. Great advice!! I have to admit that I haven't put a great deal of thought into keywords for my main Blog, but I have for my other Blogs. My main Blog has been kind of transforming as I grow, but now that it is more focused on what my passions are … it's time to do some serious keyword research. I use Market Samurai for this and I wouldn't want to be without it.

Just a couple of thoughts here….. by default, WordPress blogs have no-follow tags on all comments (including this blog)… which means that the search engines will not pick up any link associated with our comments…. so keyword or not, it's still a no-follow link. Unless the blog owner uses a do-follow plug-in, the search engines simply won't connect the dots.

Also…. putting keywords as part of the user name often appears to blog owners as though the commenter IS only leaving a comment for self-promotion. Sometimes, depending on the keyword, it can also be flagged as spam. Not sure if that's the right strategy or not.

Not meaning to be disagreeable here, just wanting to share some thoughts from another point of view…. :-)

    Sincerely,

    Robin

  • kathyjodrey

One of the great things about commenting on fellow bloggers material is that your most recent post will show under your comment, provided they have the CommentLuv plugin installed and enabled. Not only this, but it gets your name and face out there into the blogosphere and helps you to get to know others.

And naturally, there is the reciprocity factory. What goes around comes around, so it's always a good thing to give…

This is good info. Thanks Kris!

Denise, I understand your point of view. If you are commenting just to add your “two pence” then that may be all you need to do – drop the 2p and exit! However, if you are investing your time and effort in commenting, as part of your marketing strategy then it is worthwhile to stay focused and do what you came for, which might be to add value at the blog post and invite some value back to your business! That way everyone wins. If it’s a business strategy, then we operate with a business mindset – we leave behind bread (for eating) and seed (to come back to us!). If a business owner keeps leaving bread and never sows seeds he/she will soon run out of bread with no expectation of a harvest! :) But if commenting is not part of your online marketing strategy, it might be OK to leave a comment and go. In which case, I trust you have other ways of leaving bread and planting seeds! :) Happy commenting, whichever the case!

  • http://www.getcleargetknowngetclients.com Get Clients Oma

Exactly, Mike. Adding value is a big part of the strategy. If we’re not adding value then, yes, our SEO efforts could come across as self-promotion.

BTW I often get comments from grateful bloggers for the comments I leave on their blogs. I have also had people sign up for my newsletter and book complimentary calls from reading my blog comments. This pulls people, of their own free will, into my marketing pipeline. They benefit from receiving further value as they access more of my information and I increase my database of prospects. A few days ago, one such prospect had a session with me, after joining my newsletter and has invited her friends to do the same. All from a blog comment. It’s totally win-win, on a viral scale!

  • http://PaulKlaszus.com/ Paul Klaszus

Law of Reciprocity comes to mind.

Getting backlinks and recognition from people and google is great – but many times, just by commenting, it urges me to dig deeper into the post and 9 times out of 10, I learn something more!

For me and where I am in my journey to greatness – that’s worth 50 backlinks.

    Hey Kris,
Great advice, as you can see from my disqus profile I have had this implemented already. Now that the topic is comments, is there a particular reason why you are a no-follow blog? From your post it seem like you are in favor of passing the link love. Howeverl, with the settings on your blog as they are, following your advice does very little for the commenter.

  • http://visionarynetworkmarketing.com/ Paul Reimers

I think that commenting on blogs is a great practice for a number of reasons, but the potential SEO benefit may or may not be there, depending on the blog.

Most blogs are defaulted to “nofollow” on the commenter’s name. If you go to a blog and highlight the name of a commenter and then “view selection source” and look for the tag rel=”external nofollow” in the HTML code. If this is in the code there is no SEO benefit as far as the name is concerned. If a blog uses the Comment Luv plugin, then there is a “follow” link but it expires after 30 days when it reverts to a “nofollow” link.
